Q Is a vasectomy a safe and effective permanent birth control procedure?
A Vasectomy is a viable and safe from of birth control for men and for couples who do not want children. In fact, it is the most effective form of permanent birth control other than total abstinence! At Vasectomy Docs we counsel our patients carefully and answer all of your questions about effectiveness, alternative methods and any other questions you may have. It is estimated that about one of six American men over the age of 35 has had a vasectomy. In the United States, approximately 500,000 vasectomies are performed every year. You’ll be in good company when you choose to have a vasectomy.
Q Why is the No- Needle No-Scalpel Vasectomy superior to a traditional vasectomy?
A At Vasectomy Docs we believe that the No-Needle No-Scalpel Vasectomy is the “gold standard” for vasectomy procedures. Our approach, technique and experience in performing the No-Needle No-Scalpel Vasectomy is superior to older methods that use needles that penetrate your skin and scalpels that can result in multiple, larger openings that require stitches. With Our No-Needle No-Scalpel procedure, a simple spray of a local anesthetic and a single, 3/16” skin separation are all that is required. The result is a procedure that is fast, virtually pain free and allows you to return to normal activities quickly.
Q Who should perform my vasectomy?
A At Vasectomy Docs, we believe that a vasectomy should be performed by a well-trained, experienced urological specialist. While other doctors, such as some family practitioners and general surgeons do a vasectomy, only urologists have the many years of urologic training that includes scrotal anatomy and minimally invasive surgical techniques to maximize the opportunity for the excellent outcome that you expect and deserve. Excellent outcomes are about education and experience. Drs. Pugach and Benderev have dedicated their career to improving vasectomy care and have performed more than 5000 vasectomies. You can ask your doctor questions about his training and experience, but remember that you’re probably only 45 minutes away from a Vasectomy Docs office.
Q Does a vasectomy hurt?
A Vasectomy Docs typically perform the No-Needle No-Scalpel Vasectomy with no or minimal discomfort in 15 minutes or less. Since there are no needles and no scalpels used during the procedure, the discomfort is significantly lessened and the healing time is faster. Many men have their vasectomy on a Friday, spend the weekend relaxing and resume normal, non-strenuous activities on Sunday! Don’t worry – you don’t have to have your vasectomy on a Friday – we offer convenient appointments throughout each week and on some Saturdays, too!
Q Can I still ejaculate after my vasectomy?
A Yes, semen is a combination of sperm and fluids made in the testicles, seminal vesicles, prostate gland and urethra. Since 95% of your ejaculate volume is made of these fluids you will likely see no change in the volume, color or consistency of your ejaculate. So, what comes out after a vasectomy is virtually the same as what you currently have.
Q Will the levels of my male hormones (testosterone) be affected by a vasectomy? Will my libido (sex drive) be affected?
A Scientific evidence shows that male hormone levels are not affected. So, because your testosterone levels should be the same, your sex drive (libido) will not be affected. In fact, many men report an increase in sexual enjoyment because they no longer have to worry about unwanted or unintended pregnancies. Spontaneity improves!
Q When can I resume sexual activity?
A Most men can engage in sexual activity in one week or less. However, here’s an important CAUTION! You must use some form of birth control until you have your semen sample analyzed by Vasectomy Docs (or one of our approved laboratories) and we determine there are NO sperm present in your sample. It takes approximately 8 weeks before all sperm are cleared from each vas deferens (approximately 20 ejaculations). (See question/answer below)
QWhen will I know if my vasectomy is successful?
A More than 99% of vasectomies are 100% effective at preventing pregnancy. In very rare instances after a vasectomy, the 2 ends of the vas deferens can join together. This occurs in 15-20 out of every 10,000 vasectomy patients according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health – that’s 0.15 – 0.2%!
When you compare that to 1,400 out of 10,000 couples who have a pregnancy using condoms and 500 out of 10,000 using oral contraceptives, it’s clear that a vasectomy is dramatically more effective! The rare case of a vasectomy failure is why it is so important to have your post – vasectomy semen samples analyzed by your Vasectomy Doc to ensure that your vasectomy was a success. At Vasectomy Docs we back our No-Needle No- Scalpel Vasectomy with our exclusive, unique Vasectomy Guarantee!
Q Will you perform a vasectomy if I am single?
A Yes, at Vasectomy Docs we will perform vasectomies on single men. We will, though, discuss the procedure carefully with you to be sure you understand that a vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control.
Q What are the requirements for having a vasectomy procedure in California?
A California law requires that you be at least 18 years old and have a mandatory waiting period of 72 hours after you sign your consent form for sterilization. After your initial consultation , we can schedule a convenient date and time for your No-Needle No-Scalpel Vasectomy.
Q Can my vasectomy be reversed?
A In most cases, the answer is yes! We encourage all patients considering a vasectomy to be sure that you want a permanent form of contraception. While vasectomy reversal rates are successful in up to 95% of patients, you should only have a vasectomy if you are sure that you do not want to have a child or more children. Overall, approximately 7% of men decide to have their vasectomies reversed in the United States.
